State of the Union Puts Iran on Notice: Trump Says No Nukes, No Exceptions

Must read

President Trump’s State of the Union Address contained one of the most direct warnings to Iran in recent memory, as the President declared that under no circumstances would his administration allow Tehran to acquire nuclear weapons. He framed the issue as both a moral and strategic imperative, calling Iran the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism.
Trump claimed Iran is once again advancing its nuclear and missile programs after last year’s US military strike temporarily set back its capabilities. He said the country had been warned not to rebuild following Operation Midnight Hammer — the name he gave to the June airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities — but had disregarded that warning.
The President described a missile threat that has already reached beyond the Middle East. Iranian weapons, he said, can now strike Europe and US military bases in the region, and work is underway on missiles capable of reaching American cities. He used these claims to justify the ongoing US military buildup near Iran in the Gulf.
Two rounds of nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran have already taken place this month, suggesting that despite the heated rhetoric, backchannel diplomacy is active. Trump confirmed Iran wants a deal but said the absence of a clear, public commitment to forgo nuclear weapons has prevented any agreement from materializing.
Trump’s broader condemnation of the Iranian regime included accusations of mass killings of domestic protesters — he claimed at least 32,000 people were executed — and the sponsorship of terrorism that he said has killed thousands of American service members. He said US pressure had stopped further executions, framing American intervention as both necessary and humanitarian.
