Must read

Uber Technologies has taken a significant step in bolstering its global presence by agreeing to acquire the German food delivery company Delivery Hero in a substantial transaction valued at $14.8 billion. This strategic move will expand Uber’s reach across 50 international markets, marking a notable development in the ongoing consolidation of the global food-delivery industry.

According to the terms of the agreement, Uber will purchase Delivery Hero’s core global business at a rate of €41.50 ($47.60) per share. This deal also encompasses the acquisition of shares from Prosus, a major investor in Delivery Hero. The acquisition highlights Uber’s commitment to strengthening its international operations amid escalating competition in the sector.

Additionally, the transaction involves a significant role for investment firm SSW Partners, which will acquire Delivery Hero’s operations in 14 markets for approximately $1.6 billion. These assets, located in countries such as Austria, Norway, Spain, and Sweden, are set to be sold off separately by SSW, reflecting a broader trend of strategic asset realignment within the industry.

The backdrop to this acquisition is the food-delivery sector’s continuous evolution, especially following the rapid growth experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. Companies within this space have increasingly resorted to mergers and acquisitions to fortify their market positions. Uber’s expansion strategy, particularly in international markets, has been a focal point as it seeks to enhance its competitive edge globally.

Delivery Hero, on its part, initiated a strategic review in response to investor pressure for restructuring and asset sales. The acquisition by Uber is poised to significantly enhance its standing in the global food-delivery market, providing a robust platform for growth in an industry that is witnessing considerable transformation.
