Must read

Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening its strategic relationship with Laos was underscored during a recent meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Vilay Lakhamfong, a senior official of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party. The discussions focused on enhancing economic cooperation, infrastructure connectivity, and the effective implementation of bilateral agreements.

Prime Minister Hưng highlighted the substantive progress in Vietnam-Laos cooperation and stressed the importance of turning high-level commitments into practical projects benefiting both nations. He emphasized Vietnam’s support for Laos’ national development and identified potential areas for expanded collaboration, including trade, investment, defense, security, education, science, technology, and tourism.

Infrastructure development emerged as a priority, with both sides agreeing to accelerate major projects such as the Hanoi–Vientiane expressway, the Vientiane–Vung Ang railway, and energy connectivity initiatives. The proposal for a Laos–Vietnam Friendship University was also discussed as part of efforts to bolster bilateral ties.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment to the Vietnam–Laos Cooperation Strategy for 2021–2030 and the bilateral governmental cooperation agreement for 2026–2030. Both countries stressed the importance of regular high-level exchanges and closer collaboration among ministries, local authorities, and businesses.

As the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam–Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation approach in 2027, preparations are underway for the Vietnam–Laos Year of Friendship and Strategic Cohesion. These activities are expected to promote the historic ties between the two nations, particularly among younger generations.

Vilay Lakhamfong expressed gratitude for Vietnam’s support in Laos’ development and reiterated his country’s commitment to maintaining the bilateral relationship. He also underscored the need for continued coordination on regional security, stability, and economic development.

The discussions concluded with both sides expressing confidence that enhanced cooperation would further strengthen political trust, advance shared development goals, and contribute to regional peace and stability.
