Vietnam and Switzerland are poised to deepen their bilateral relations, focusing on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and innovation. This commitment was reiterated by Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President Nguyễn Thị Thanh during an event in Bern commemorating Vietnam’s National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Thanh emphasized the significance Vietnam places on its relationship with Switzerland, acknowledging the latter’s support during pivotal moments in Vietnam’s history. She suggested that there are substantial opportunities for collaboration, particularly in areas where Switzerland excels and Vietnam seeks development, such as science, technology, and innovation.
Trade and economic collaboration form a cornerstone of Vietnam-Switzerland relations, with annual trade exceeding $2 billion. More than 100 Swiss companies are operational in Vietnam, spanning industries like pharmaceuticals, food processing, precision machinery, and watchmaking. Thanh expressed Vietnam’s intent to leverage this political trust and traditional friendship to expand economic ties further.
Swiss Senator Mauro Poggia highlighted the progress in bilateral cooperation since Vietnam’s economic renewal, pointing out Switzerland’s role in supporting Vietnam’s economic transformation and sustainable development efforts. Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Châu Mai Anh noted the upcoming establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership in 2025 and ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association as pivotal developments.
Both countries recognize the potential for further collaboration in sectors such as digital transformation, sustainable development, finance, and human resource development. These areas represent mutual interests where Vietnam and Switzerland can foster innovation and growth.
