Vietnam has called for enhanced collaboration with ASEAN countries to tackle the growing challenge of transnational crime and the pursuit of criminal fugitives across Southeast Asia. At a recent meeting held in Hà Nội with leaders from ASEAN member states and representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng emphasized the importance of bilateral extradition and prisoner-transfer agreements.
The prime minister urged the swift ratification of the ASEAN Treaty on Extradition, which aims to streamline the legal processes involved in transferring fugitives between countries. He highlighted the need for effective mechanisms to verify information, locate, apprehend, and extradite criminals, stressing the importance of utilizing INTERPOL and ASEANAPOL databases and establishing direct information-sharing channels to bolster investigations.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Hưng proposed increased exchanges between law enforcement agencies and the development of specialized training programs. He also advocated for closer cooperation in technology and digital transformation to enhance regional capacity to combat cross-border crime.
During the conference, participants adopted an ASEAN Joint Action Plan and a Joint Declaration, both aimed at reinforcing regional cooperation against criminal fugitives. These initiatives reflect a collective commitment among ASEAN countries to address the challenges posed by transnational crime through improved collaboration and resource-sharing.
