Instagram is reimagining how users interact with video content by testing a new “pop-out” player for Reels. This Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality, similar to what is already offered by YouTube and TikTok, is designed to cater to the modern multitasker, allowing videos to run in a floating window outside of the main app.
This experimental feature aims to make the platform more flexible. A user could be watching a cooking tutorial on Reels and switch to their notes app to write down the ingredients without the video ever stopping. The small, movable video window ensures that the content remains visible and accessible. This is currently being tested with a limited user base to gather feedback before a potential wider release.
The benefits extend beyond user convenience. By enabling continuous playback, Instagram is providing a powerful tool for creators to boost their engagement statistics. Longer watch times and fewer mid-video drop-offs could become the new norm if this feature is widely adopted. The platform has also confirmed that users will be able to easily opt out by disabling the “Picture in Picture” toggle in the Reel’s three-dot menu.
In another major user-centric move, Instagram has also unveiled a native application for the iPad. After years of requests, tablet users can now enjoy an experience specifically designed for their larger screens, complete with updated layouts and smoother navigation to enhance content consumption.
