China’s Advanced Solar Technology Dominates 99.3% of Thailand Imports

Must read

Thailand is poised to transform its energy landscape with a significant surge in solar panel imports, which could drastically reduce household electricity costs and boost the country’s clean-energy supply chain. The Thai government is set to roll out a household solar installation program, offering subsidies of approximately THB50,000 per household, potentially reaching one million homes with a possible extension to 1.5 million.

The initiative aligns with a remarkable 88.7% increase in solar panel imports to $426.7 million in the first seven months of 2026, fueled predominantly by imports from China. According to data from Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce and Customs Department, Chinese imports alone accounted for $423.9 million, marking a 107.1% rise compared to last year. Smaller contributions came from Singapore and Hong Kong, each representing a mere 0.3% of the total import value.

Thailand’s strategic move towards renewable energy is not only about cutting electricity costs but also about fostering a robust domestic solar manufacturing industry. The government is collaborating with the Ministry of Labour to provide workforce training in solar panel assembly, installation, and maintenance. Additionally, discussions with the Board of Investment are underway to reduce duties on production inputs that are not available domestically, further supporting local manufacturing capabilities.

By encouraging both rooftop and ground-mounted solar installations, Thailand aims to build a sustainable energy infrastructure that supports economic growth while mitigating environmental impact. This effort positions the country as a proactive player in the global shift towards renewable energy, with the solar panel import surge serving as a crucial step in this transformation.
