Singapore and Thailand are set to enhance their bilateral and regional collaboration as they gear up to lead the ASEAN chairmanship in successive years, with Singapore assuming the role in 2027 followed by Thailand in 2028. This decision emerged from discussions between Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat, held in Bangkok on September 2. This marked the first bilateral retreat between the two nations in over a decade and the inaugural meeting between the current leaders.
The dialogue underscored the robust nature of Singapore-Thailand relations, with both leaders committed to crafting a multi-year agenda to ensure continuity across their forthcoming ASEAN chairmanships. They emphasized expanding cooperation in critical domains such as artificial intelligence, the digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, defense and security, and efforts against transnational crime. Both sides reiterated their support for a rules-based international order and a more integrated ASEAN region.
Energy cooperation emerged as a pivotal area of focus, particularly regarding the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This initiative is significant as it facilitates Singapore’s importation of renewable hydropower from Laos, transmitted through Thailand and Malaysia, thus bolstering the region’s energy sustainability.
The leaders also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing social sector development. This agreement encompasses the exchange of research and knowledge on social welfare policies and outlines cooperation between relevant institutions in both countries. This partnership aims to foster better understanding and development of social welfare frameworks.
Economic relations between Singapore and Thailand remain vital, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Additionally, Singapore has been Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three consecutive years, underscoring the economic interdependence and mutual benefits that accompany their continued partnership.
