Thailand’s exporters might soon experience relief from potential tariff increases as the country accelerates negotiations with the United States on a reciprocal trade agreement. The Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) aims to safeguard Thai exporters from higher tariffs, which currently include a 12.5% duty under a US Section 301 measure tied to forced labor concerns. Further tariffs might be imposed due to an ongoing US investigation into excess production capacity.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is expected to engage directly with US President Donald Trump to discuss these trade negotiations. Thai officials are actively working to address US concerns by submitting data that challenges the American assessment of Thailand’s production capacity. They argue that the capacity in several industries has been underestimated, hoping to update the US evaluation and secure more favorable tariff conditions.
The ART is seen as a strategic move to align Thailand’s tariff treatment with regional competitors like Malaysia and Indonesia, which could enhance market access for Thai goods and provide more certainty for exporters. While negotiations are ongoing, Thai officials emphasize the importance of reaching an agreement that mirrors the advantages enjoyed by neighboring countries.
Beyond tariffs, the trade agreement is set to tackle issues related to trade barriers, investment opportunities, and market access in Thailand. Any finalized deal will require approval through Thailand’s domestic legal procedures before it can be implemented. The talks represent a significant effort by Thailand to protect its economic interests amid evolving US trade policies.
