Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the strike targeted weapons depots and command-and-control centers at the Sharurah military base. Meanwhile, Saudi civil defense officials confirmed that a projectile landed near the border with Yemen, injuring two individuals and causing damage to a mosque and several buildings.
In retaliation, Yemeni government forces have stepped up their military operations against Houthi targets. They reported conducting three airstrikes in the Taiz region, focusing on Houthi positions and weaponry near the Red Sea port city of Mocha. This surge in violence comes on the heels of a week-long Houthi offensive that has resulted in the capture of significant portions of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and several key islands, bolstering their strategic hold near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime passage at the southern entrance to the Red Sea.
The Houthis have also declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Red Sea ports, prompting concerns over regional shipping and energy supplies. With the increasing importance of this waterway for Saudi oil exports, especially amid disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the blockade has heightened tensions in the region. Saudi Arabia remains a staunch supporter of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, while the Houthis continue to receive backing from Iran, further exacerbating regional hostilities.
This escalation in conflict has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of civilians fleeing their homes as the fighting intensifies. Displaced populations are facing significant challenges in securing shelter in safer regions. According to the United Nations, there has been a marked increase in displacement since July, and the recent clashes have resulted in over 500 fatalities.
