In the wake of devastating flash floods in Nepal, rescue teams are racing against time to reach over 900 hydropower workers who are feared to be trapped in underground tunnels across more than a dozen power projects. The calamity has claimed nearly 940 lives in Nepal, with additional casualties reported in Tibet, and thousands more remain missing in both regions. In particular, around 500 workers are believed to be stranded in tunnels at hydropower sites located in the heavily impacted Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. Inside the tunnels, rescuers encounter perilous conditions, with mud reaching chest height and visibility severely reduced. Despite the grim circumstances, there is a sliver of hope as some rescuers believe that certain safe zones within the tunnel systems might have allowed some workers to survive. This disaster has affected tens of thousands of people, obliterating entire communities and sparking renewed concerns about the destabilizing effects of climate change on glacial and mountainous regions. Nepal’s leadership has characterized the flooding as an unprecedented natural disaster, and a massive response effort has been mobilized, involving tens of thousands of security personnel and volunteers.

International support has been swift, with specialized rescue teams, funding, and technical assistance being provided by neighboring countries, highlighting the scale of the crisis. Amid the devastation, a moment of hope emerged when rescuers successfully pulled a young child alive from the mud. However, the situation has also raised concerns about the exchange of glacier and water-level data between neighboring countries, with officials worried that current gaps in information-sharing could impede future disaster preparedness efforts in the region.
