Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana is set to offer a fresh perspective on the cherished animated classic by depicting its protagonist as a bold warrior rather than a conventional princess. The film’s narrative is crafted to resonate with a contemporary audience by emphasizing themes of bravery, empathy, and cultural heritage.
Dwayne Johnson returns to the screen as the demigod Maui, reprising his celebrated role from the 2016 animated version while also stepping into the role of producer. Johnson has highlighted that Moana is portrayed as “not a princess, but a warrior,” and he believes the film’s exploration of community, self-discovery, and Polynesian culture will have a broad appeal across various age groups.
The title character is portrayed by 19-year-old Catherine LagaÊ»aia, an Australian actor with Samoan roots, who was selected from an extensive audition process that considered over 32,000 candidates. LagaÊ»aia shared that inhabiting the role of Moana contributed to her personal growth, particularly inspired by the character’s compassion and empathy. She remarked on Moana’s choice to prioritize understanding over anger, even in challenging situations.
By focusing on themes of resilience, empathy, and genuineness, the film aims to connect with Generation Alpha while maintaining fidelity to the essence of the original tale. LagaÊ»aia’s portrayal seeks to embody these values, potentially inspiring a new generation with Moana’s narrative of strength and kindness.
The live-action Moana made its debut in India, available in both English and Hindi, on July 10, inviting audiences to experience this modern reimagining of a beloved story.
