In an effort to address workforce shortages and enhance economic growth, Greece is actively pursuing stronger labor cooperation with Vietnam and other ASEAN countries, according to Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Athanasios Plevris. During a meeting in Athens with representatives from Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, Plevris underscored the importance of establishing early bilateral labor agreements. He highlighted that such agreements would protect the rights of both workers and employers while also supporting Greece’s initiatives to curb irregular migration.
Plevris noted that effective migration management has become a critical focus for Greece, especially in light of the European Union’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum. This strategic move is aimed at aligning with broader EU policies while addressing Greece’s specific labor needs. The minister’s comments reflect a proactive approach to creating structured pathways for labor migration, which could contribute to both economic stability and social cohesion.
Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Thị Thu Hương expressed optimism about the progress made in discussions since earlier meetings with the Greek minister. She voiced her hope that Greece and Vietnam would soon finalize a bilateral labor agreement. Such an accord would not only increase employment opportunities for Vietnamese workers but also bolster the diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
Welcoming the proposal, Minister Plevris instructed relevant Greek authorities to expedite negotiations with Vietnam and other ASEAN nations. The goal is to swiftly conclude labor cooperation agreements that would benefit all parties involved. According to the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum, there are currently around 1,700 Vietnamese workers with valid residence permits in Greece.
