Investing in Sleep Tech? Experts Highlight Importance of Fundamental Practices

Must read

The burgeoning sleep economy is gaining momentum as awareness of the importance of quality rest continues to rise. This trend has led to a surge in the market for sleep-enhancing products, ranging from high-tech gadgets like smartwatches and sleep-tracking apps to advanced mattresses, weighted blankets, and white-noise machines. While these items promise a better night’s sleep, experts caution that they cannot substitute the foundational elements of healthy sleep. Factors such as stress, excessive screen time, irregular schedules, noise, and untreated sleep disorders can persistently disrupt rest, irrespective of the sophistication of sleep technology.

Though a comfortable mattress or a smart device can enhance one’s sleep environment and offer insights into sleeping patterns, they come with limitations. Persistent stress, anxiety, changing work hours, and underlying sleep disorders often require more than just technological solutions. Interestingly, the term “orthosomnia” has emerged to describe the fixation on achieving “perfect” sleep, driven by constant monitoring of sleep data. Ironically, this obsession can increase anxiety around sleep, making it more challenging to unwind at night.

Despite the proliferation of sleep-related products, true restful sleep still hinges on maintaining consistent habits. Experts emphasize the importance of a regular sleep schedule, physical activity, stress management, and minimizing screen exposure before bed. These elements form a more robust foundation for quality sleep. The physical environment also plays a crucial role, with a quiet, dark, and comfortably temperate bedroom being essential for relaxation. When sleep issues persist, they should not be solely addressed through consumer products; medical advice may be necessary for symptoms like chronic difficulty sleeping, loud snoring, breathing interruptions during sleep, or significant daytime drowsiness.

The expanding market for sleep solutions now includes wellness-focused hotels and sleep retreats, which illustrate a broader shift towards viewing sleep as a vital component of overall health rather than mere downtime. While the trend of “sleepmaxxing” — optimizing sleep through routines, products, diet, and technology — is gaining traction, experts advise against turning sleep into another performance metric. Although certain practices associated with this trend might be beneficial, it’s crucial to maintain a balanced approach rather than making sleep another source of pressure.
