The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has significantly strengthened the collaboration between Vietnam and France in the field of space technology. With a keen eye on the future, both nations are setting their sights on developing next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhancing domestic capabilities. The VNREDSat-1, which took to the skies on May 7, 2013, stands as Vietnam’s pioneering Earth observation satellite, officially transitioning to operation in September of the same year. Impressively, despite an anticipated lifespan of just five years, the satellite continues to function effectively in 2026, marking 14 years of service.
This initiative has propelled Vietnam beyond mere satellite operations, allowing the country to cultivate substantial expertise. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training sessions in both France and Vietnam. The training encompassed various aspects such as system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. Over time, these engineers have evolved to independently tackle technical challenges, moving from following transferred procedures to crafting their own innovative solutions.
In addition to building human capital, Vietnam has also established a comprehensive remote-sensing system. This system efficiently manages imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has produced approximately 30,000 satellite images, which have been instrumental in numerous areas including environmental management, natural-resource monitoring, disaster oversight, scientific research, socio-economic development, and security-related activities.
The President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Trần Hồng Thái, emphasized that the program has laid a vital technical and human-resource groundwork for forthcoming satellite projects. Nonetheless, he pointed out the need for more advancements in technological self-reliance, particularly in fields such as satellite design, payloads, electronics, software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter of collaboration was inaugurated during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent focusing on long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. The future trajectory of this partnership is expected to prioritize Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, and the development of subsystems and software. By fostering capabilities in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and ground systems, Vietnam aims to transition from merely acquiring satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology, ultimately enabling its scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, and innovate satellite technology.
