Vietnam and Laos have reinforced their commitment to a comprehensive cooperation plan for 2026, emphasizing increased collaboration in key sectors such as investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development. At a mid-year gathering in Da Nang, officials from the two nations evaluated the progress achieved in the first eight months of the year and set forth priorities for the remaining months of 2026.
The economic partnership between Vietnam and Laos continues to grow significantly. Vietnamese enterprises have initiated 20 new investment projects in Laos, amounting to $638.3 million within the first seven months of the year. Laos stands as Vietnam’s top overseas investment destination, hosting around 300 projects backed by Vietnamese interests, with a collective value exceeding $7 billion.
In the realm of trade, the bilateral exchange of goods reached approximately $1.3 billion in the first half of 2026. Both countries are making strides in enhancing cooperation across various fields, including energy, transportation, construction, and infrastructure connectivity, aiming to bolster regional economic integration.
Education and human resource development have been underscored as critical areas for continued cooperation. Vietnam is offering 1,300 scholarships to Lao students in 2026, alongside allocating $43 million in aid as part of a broader assistance initiative spanning from 2026 to 2030. This effort underscores the commitment to fostering educational ties and skill development between the two nations.
Additionally, Vietnam and Laos have agreed to enhance coordination on major projects, tackle investment-related challenges, and fortify economic connections within the broader Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. These steps are expected to pave the way for strengthened economic ties and mutually beneficial development in the coming years.
