In a significant diplomatic engagement, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing convened in Hà Nội on September 5, marking the latter’s inaugural visit to Vietnam in his current capacity. The two leaders emphasized their commitment to bolstering bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across various sectors. During their meeting, Hưng assured Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s ongoing efforts in achieving stability, reconciliation, economic development, and fostering dialogue.
President Min Aung Hlaing commended Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its strengthening presence on both regional and international fronts. He expressed a keen interest in drawing insights from Vietnam’s development journey. Reaffirming Myanmar’s dedication to its longstanding friendship with Vietnam, Min Aung Hlaing highlighted the importance of broadening cooperative efforts between the two nations.
The discussions underscored the recent advancements in their bilateral relationship, with both leaders agreeing on the importance of enhancing high-level exchanges and building political trust. They advocated for the revival of key cooperative mechanisms in trade, security, and defense. Defense and security collaboration emerged as a pivotal element, with plans to intensify efforts against cross-border crime, cyber threats, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Additionally, the nations intend to enhance military training, young officer exchanges, and address non-traditional security challenges collaboratively.
Economic collaboration featured prominently in the talks, as both parties explored strategies to amplify trade and modernize existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation for Vietnamese investments in sectors like telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. The leaders also deliberated on improving infrastructure and air connectivity, restoring direct flights, and creating joint tourism initiatives, particularly focusing on spiritual and medical tourism.
Turning to regional matters, Vietnam reiterated its commitment to working alongside ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders endorsed the peaceful resolution of disputes in line with international law. In a gesture of continued cooperation, Hưng invited Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and preside over the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026, while the Myanmar president extended an invitation for Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually agreeable time.
