In a significant diplomatic development, Anutin Charnvirakul and Emmanuel Macron have decided to elevate the relationship between Thailand and France to a strategic partnership. The agreement came during formal discussions held at the Élysée Palace in Paris, where both leaders emphasized the importance of expanding collaboration in crucial sectors such as trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology.
The talks underscored the intent to boost cooperation in various industries, including alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its support for finalizing the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement by the end of the year, a negotiation process that began in 2013 but faced a hiatus in 2014 before resuming in 2023. Thai officials have highlighted the economic opportunities this agreement could unlock for both nations.
Cybersecurity and defense emerged as pivotal areas of focus, with both countries committing to strengthen efforts in combating cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. Regional issues were also on the agenda, with Thailand affirming its dedication to addressing border disputes with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international legal frameworks.
The strategic partnership is set to be formalized through the implementation of the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership from 2026 to 2028. This ambitious plan aims to further cement the bilateral ties between the two nations. During his visit, Anutin engaged with executives from leading French companies such as Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, encouraging them to invest in Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future-oriented industries.
French businesses expressed optimism about Thailand’s investment climate, with Airbus announcing plans to expand its aviation and engineering operations within the country. This move signals a strong confidence in the continued economic collaboration between Thailand and France, setting the stage for a robust strategic partnership in the coming years.
