VNREDSat-1 Boosts Vietnam-France Partnership in Advanced Space Technology Innovation

The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has become a cornerstone in enhancing Vietnam and France’s collaboration in space technology, with future initiatives poised to advance into areas like next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and boosting domestic capabilities. Since its launch on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite, has been operational well beyond its initial five-year lifespan, marking its 14th year in operation by 2026. The satellite was fully handed over for operation in September 2013.

This program has significantly bolstered Vietnam’s proficiency in satellite technology, extending beyond just operational capacity. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training enabled them to independently address technical issues, shifting from reliance on transferred procedures to formulating their own solutions. Furthermore, Vietnam established a comprehensive remote-sensing system capable of managing image requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images for diverse purposes, including environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security.

According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a vital technical and human-resource groundwork for future satellite initiatives. However, he emphasized the need for enhanced technological autonomy, which requires advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems. This sentiment echoes the broader goal of transitioning from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology, empowering Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually develop future satellite technology generations.

A new chapter in Vietnam-France space cooperation was initiated during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, a declaration of intent on long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation was signed by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies. This partnership is now exploring a next-generation Earth observation system and technological prospects for a proposed VNREDSat-2.

Looking ahead, future collaborations aim to increase Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. Areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and specific sensors and payloads are anticipated to provide Vietnam opportunities to strengthen its domestic expertise, moving closer to the goal of technological self-reliance in satellite development.
