Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their diplomatic ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in celebration of their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. This development signifies a pivotal advancement in their collaboration across political, economic, and technological spheres.
During the official visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, the two nations signed a series of agreements spanning economic cooperation, science and technology, education, and aviation development. These agreements are foundational to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan, which outlines a framework for collaboration from 2026 to 2031, aiming to enhance joint efforts across various sectors.
The partnership also focuses on reinforcing security and defense ties, particularly in combating transnational crimes such as online scams and illegal fishing. Economic coordination is another priority, with both countries aiming to mitigate global economic uncertainties and foster private-sector growth. A shared objective has been set to boost bilateral trade from the current figure of approximately $22.1 billion to a target of $24 billion in the near future.
Emphasizing technology and innovation, Thailand and Vietnam plan to strengthen cooperation in fields such as satellite technology, semiconductors, and agricultural biotechnology. These efforts are aimed at integrating supply chains, promoting local economic connectivity, and enhancing green energy collaboration to bolster regional competitiveness and energy security.
President Tô Lâm reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to deepening its relationship with Thailand, with a shared commitment to advancing peace, stability, and sustainable development in Southeast Asia. This comprehensive partnership sets a foundation for future growth and cooperation between the two nations.
