Vietnam has underscored its expanding influence in enhancing cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit celebrating 35 years of dialogue relations. According to Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung, Vietnam played a pivotal role in the summit’s success by advocating for ASEAN’s central role and supporting initiatives to fortify its strategic partnership with Russia.
Heading the Vietnamese delegation, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng focused on promoting dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law. Vietnam put forward proposals to broaden collaboration in critical sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. The summit concluded with the adoption of new frameworks designed to bolster ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, identifying energy as a key component of the partnership.
In a demonstration of its commitment to nurturing future regional cooperation, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. On the sidelines of the commemorative summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Vladimir Putin, where both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their talks centered on expanding cooperation in areas including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam expressed confidence that the summit’s results would bolster ASEAN–Russia relations, contribute to regional stability, and create new avenues for economic growth and cooperation throughout Eurasia. The outcomes of the summit are expected to pave the way for strengthened relations and increased opportunities for collaboration between ASEAN and Russia.
