Vietnam and Norway Boost Trade and Renewable Energy Ties with New Agreements

Must read

As Vietnam and Norway approach the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026, both nations are intensifying their cooperation in trade, renewable energy, and maritime development. A recent meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål underscored this commitment, focusing on economic and diplomatic ties.

A significant outcome of the discussions was the advancement of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. The agreement, which follows 14 years of negotiations, aims to enhance market access, foster business partnerships, and provide stability for investors. Vietnam has urged all parties to expedite ratification procedures to ensure the agreement’s implementation soon.

The meeting also highlighted the potential of the Green Strategic Partnership, established in April, to propel both nations towards sustainable development and cleaner energy transitions. Vietnam encouraged Norwegian businesses to invest more in sectors like renewable energy, maritime transport, and high-tech aquaculture. Norway expressed a keen interest in collaborating on marine management, sustainable aquaculture, and the circular economy.

In addition to economic and environmental collaboration, regional cooperation was a focal point of the discussions. Both countries agreed to bolster their efforts within the ASEAN-Norway partnership framework for 2026–2030, concentrating on the blue economy, energy transition, and innovation. They also aimed to enhance coordination in regional and international forums, including the United Nations, emphasizing the importance of free trade and adherence to international law, such as the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The dialogue between Vietnam and Norway reflects a shared commitment to expanding economic opportunities and strengthening diplomatic ties, with a clear focus on sustainable development and cooperation in key strategic areas. This renewed partnership aims to foster stability and growth for both nations as they look towards a future of mutual benefit.
